520^aTherehasbeendramaticsocialchangewithrespecttolesbian,gay,bisexual,andtransgender(LGBT)rightsaroundtheworldinthelastdecade.YetlegalprotectionandinclusionremainlimitedforLGBTyouth.Thecontextofschoolingisespeciallyimportant-schoolsremaintheprimarysocietalinstitutiontowhichmostyouthhaveaccessandinwhichnearlyallyouthspendsomesignificantportionoftheirlives.LGBTyouthareatriskforsomeofthegreatestdifficultiesexperiencedbyadolescents,andmanyofthoseproblemshavebeentraceddirectlytonegativeschoolexperiences.Researchshowsthatanti-LGBTschoolvictimizationresultsinpooracademicperformanceandnegativeschoolattitudes,mentalhealth,andriskbehaviors.NewstudieshaveidentifiedcharacteristicsofschoolsthatareassociatedwithinclusionandsafetyforLGBTstudents,includingpracticesandpoliciesthatareassociatedwithpositiveschoolclimateandstudentwellbeing.SexualOrientation,GenderIdentity,andSchoolingbringstogethercontributionsfromadiversegroupofresearchers,policyanalysts,andeducationadvocatesfromaroundtheworldtosynthesizethepracticeandpolicyimplicationsofresearchonsexualorientation,genderidentity,andschooling.Thebookisinterdisciplinary,asstudiesofLGBTstudentsandschoolinghaveemergedacrossdisciplinesincludingeducation,clinical,school,anddevelopmentalpsychology;sociology;andpublichealth.Includedaresynthesesofkeyareasofresearch;examplesofnewinternationalmodelsforeducationalpractice;casestudiesoftransformationalpolicyandpractice;andspecificexamplesofthenexusofresearch,practice,andpolicy.Thefundamentalgoalofthisbookistoadvancesocialjusticerelatedtosexualorientationandgenderidentitythroughstrengtheningtherelationshipbetweenresearch,practice,andpolicytosupportLGBTstudentsandschools.Itwillbeofinteresttoschool,developmental,andclinicalpsychologists,educatorsandschooladministrators,andLGBTscholars.
