Note	สงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง หลังการบุกหาดโอมาฮ่าเมื่อวันที่ 6 มิถุนายน ค.ศ. 1944 แล้ว กองทัพอเมริกันประสบความสูญเสียเป็นอย่างมาก ทหารหลายคนบาดเจ็บ พิการ และล้มตาย ร้อยเอก จอห์น มิลเลอร์ (ทอม แฮงค์) ผู้นำกองทหารกองหนึ่ง ก็พบกับความสูญเสียของผู้ใต้บังคับบัญชาในครั้งนี้ด้วย แต่ในยุทธการยกพลขึ้นบกครั้งนี้ของสัมพันธมิตร นำมาซึ่งความสูญเสียของบุตรชาย 3 คนแห่งตระกูลไรอัน ซึ่งกองทัพสหรัฐได้ส่งจดหมายแสดงความเสียใจมาแก่คุณนายไรอัน แต่ทว่า ในการพิมพ์จดหมายนั้น เสมียนผู้พิมพ์พบถึงความสูญเสียของตระกูลไรอันแล้ว 3 คน ซึ่งยังเหลือเพียงบุตรชายคนสุดท้อง คือ พลทหาร เจมส์ ไรอัน (แมตต์ เดม่อน) ที่ตกอยู่ในแนวข้าศึกโดยไม่ทราบชะตากรรม จึงได้รายงานต่อผู้บังคับบัญชา (เดนนิส ฟารีนา) ซึ่งได้ตัดสินใจให้พาพลทหารไรอันกลับบ้านมาอย่างปลอดภัย ภารกิจนำพลทหารไรอันกลับบ้านจึงตกแก่กองกำลังของร้อยเอกมิลเลอร์ ซึ่งมีผู้ใต้บังคับบัญชา 7 คน โดยที่แต่ละคนไม่เข้าใจว่า ทำไมต้องเสี่ยงชีวิตคนส่วนใหญ่เพื่อชีวิตคน ๆ เดียวด้วย โดยที่ระหว่างทางพวกเขาต้องประสบกับความสูญเสียเป็นอย่างมาก ซึ่งในท้ายที่สุด หลายคนได้เสียชีวิตรวมทั้งร้อยเอกมิลเลอร์ด้วย แต่ก่อนตาย เขาได้บอกแก่ไรอันว่า ใช้ชีวิตให้คุ้มค่า ซึ่งไรอันได้จดจำและสำนึกในบุญคุณของมิลเลอร์ไปตลอด
