Note	คานธี เป็นภาพยนตร์ชีวประวัติ สร้างขึ้นจากเรื่องจริงของมหาตมา คานธี นักการเมืองชาวอินเดีย ผู้เคลื่อนไหวเพื่อปลดปล่อยอินเดีย จากการเป็นเมืองขึ้นของสหราชอาณาจักร และได้ชื่อว่าเป็นวีรบุรุษผู้ยิ่งใหญ่คนหนึ่งของอินเดีย ออกฉายในค.ศ. 1982 และได้ชนะเลิศรางวัลออสการ์ ถึง 8 รางวัล ในเหตุการณ์จริง อังกฤษเข้าครอบครองอินเดียใน ค.ศ. 1858 และตั้งชื่ออาณานิคมใหม่นี้ว่าบริติชราช คานธี เกิดในบริติชราชค.ศ. 1869 และได้มองเห็นและได้สัมผัสความไม่ยุติธรรม ที่ชนผิวดำและชาวรากหญ้าถูกปฏิบัติอย่างไม่เป็นธรรม ต่อมาจึงได้ประท้วง โดยใช้วิธีแบบสันติ อหิงสา เพื่อปลดปล่อยอินเดียให้เป็นเอกราช ทุกครั้งที่ประท้วง มักมีประชาชนอินเดียเข้าร่วมนับแสน ถึงหลายล้านคน ความเดือดร้อนจากการประท้วงของคานธีมีน้อยมาก มีประชาชนเพียงไม่กี่ร้อยคน ที่ประท้วงแบบไม่สันติ แต่รัฐบาลอังกฤษพยายามรักษาอำนาจ (อันได้มาจากการรุกราน) จึงหาทางจับกุมตัวคานธีในทุกวิถีทาง และพยายามทำลายภาพลักษณ์ของคานธี แต่ยิ่งรัฐบาลพยายามดำเนินการดังกล่าวมากเท่าไร ยิ่งจะทำให้เหตุการณ์บานปลายขึ้นเท่านั้น นอกจากสังคมโลกจะไม่เชื่อรัฐบาลแล้ว หลายครั้งหลายหนที่คานธีถูกจับกุม ก็มีประชาชนที่เคียดแค้นลุกฮือจนเกิดเหตุจลาจลระดับประเทศ ต่อมาวันหนึ่ง นายพล Dyer ของฝ่ายอังกฤษ ไม่พอใจ จึงสั่งให้ยิงกราดเข้าไปในกลุ่มประชาชนในที่สาธารณะ จนมีผู้เสียชีวิต ทำให้รัฐบาลเสื่อมเสียเกียรติยศขึ้นไปอีก และถูกโลกประณามอย่างรุนแรง จนในที่สุด หลังจากคานธีต่อสู้เพื่ออินเดียเป็นเวลายาวนานกว่า 40 ปี รัฐบาลออกประกาศในค.ศ. 1945 ว่าจะให้เอกราชอินเดียทันทีที่ชาวอินเดียหารัฐบาลของตนได้ แต่ทว่า อินเดียกลับแตกแยกกันเองในการขึ้นมาปกครอง ระหว่างชาวอินเดียที่นับถือศาสนาอิสลาม กับอินเดียที่นับถือศาสนาพราหมณ์-ฮินดู แม้คานธีจะพยายามเป็นข้อกลางในการสมานฉันท์ แต่ด้วยความที่คานธีเองนับถือศาสนาพราหมณ์-ฮินดู จึงทำให้เป็นการยาก จนกระทั่งบานปลายเป็นการแบ่งแยกประเทศ โดยปากีสถาน เป็นประเทศของชาวอินเดียที่นับถือศาสนาอิสลาม และอินเดีย เป็นประเทศของผู้ที่นับถือพราหมณ์-ฮินดู ในที่สุด ทั้งสองรัฐก็ได้รับเอกราชใน ค.ศ. 1947 โดยสมบูรณ์ ด้วยเหตุนี้ ค.ศ. 1948 คานธี ถูกผู้คลั่งศาสนาลอบสังหาร
