Note	Pather Panchali เล่าเรื่องในช่วงต้นศตวรรษที่ 20 ณ หมู่บ้านชนบทแห่งหนึ่งครอบครัววรรณะพราหมณ์ ฐานะยากจน ผลพวงของความยากจน ทำให้พ่อต้องเดินทางไปต่างเมืองเป็นเวลานานๆ เพื่อหางานทำ ทิ้งให้แม่เป็นผู้ดูแลความเป็นอยู่ของลูก 2 และหญิงชราที่เป็นญาติผู้ใหญ่ ความอัตคัดขัดสนใช่เพียงมีผลต่อชีวิตที่ต้องดำเนินไปเท่านั้น แต่ยังพรากสมาชิกในครอบครัวไปถึง 2 คน คนแรกคือหญิงชรา ซึ่งนอนตายตามลำพังในป่าเพราะถูกแม่ไล่ออกจากบ้าน อีกคนหนึ่งคือ ดูร์กา ลูกสาว ซึ่งป่วยหนักและเสียชีวิต กว่าที่พ่อจะรู้ว่าลูกสาวจากไปก็เมื่อผ่านไปหลายวัน
